Introducing the Hona MCP Server

Connect your firm's client communication data to the AI tools you already use.

Early access is opening firm by firm. Join the release list

What we're announcing

Starting today, Hona client firms can connect Hona to any AI assistant that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The Hona MCP Server exposes your case statuses, client communication history, phase timelines, and client engagement data so your AI tools can read and reason over it directly, without exports, without copy-paste.

It works with Claude, ChatGPT, and any MCP-compatible client. Setup is simple and takes minutes, managed entirely from your Hona admin settings.

Why this matters

Law firms generate vast amounts of valuable communication and engagement data every day. Accessing and analyzing that data quickly allows leadership to spot trends, support case managers, and improve client experiences in real time.

The Hona MCP Server provides a direct, flexible way to connect your Hona data with AI tools, enabling effortless querying and analysis without manual exports or complex workflows. Built on open standards, it helps firms get actionable insights from their data faster and with greater convenience.

What you can do with it

Two routine management questions, before and after.

Is my team keeping up with client communication?

Before. A managing partner asks each case manager how their caseload feels. The answers are honest but qualitative: "busy," "manageable," "behind on a few." Response times and client sentiment are invisible until a client complains or leaves.

After. A report runs every Monday morning showing each case manager's median response time to client messages, the number of client messages that went more than 48 hours without a reply, and NPS scores and trend by team member. The partner sees where the load is uneven and who needs support before it shows up as attrition.

Why are clients leaving, and what do they actually care about?

Before. When a client fires the firm, leadership reconstructs the reasons from memory and a few anecdotes. Decisions about what to fix are made on instinct.

After. The partner asks: "What are the top five themes in inbound client messages over the last quarter, and which ones correlate with low NPS or departures?" The assistant reads the communication history in Hona and returns the themes with representative examples. The firm builds proactive outreach around the concerns that are actually driving dissatisfaction, rather than the ones that are loudest in the hallway.

Other things firms can do on day one:

  • "Which clients have sent three or more unanswered messages in the past two weeks?"
  • "Which cases have been in the treatment phase longer than 90 days?"
  • "Compare client satisfaction between the personal injury and workers' comp practice groups over the last six months."
  • "Show me engagement trends for clients onboarded in the last quarter."
  • "Which clients went quiet after their case moved into negotiation? Draft a check-in for each."

Thanks to the composable nature of MCP, your Hona data seamlessly integrates with your calendar, billing, and case management software within a unified session. This allows your AI assistant to resolve complex, cross-platform inquiries, such as pinpointing clients with upcoming deadlines this month who have gone 30 days without contact, or evaluating how attorney realization rates relate to client response times.

Built for law firms: permissions and control

Access to client data in an AI context has to meet the same bar as access anywhere else in your firm. The Hona MCP Server is built accordingly.

  • Firm-controlled. Administrators enable the Hona MCP Server and decide which users can connect. Nothing is on by default.
  • Scoped. Users see only the matters they already have permission to see in Hona. The server inherits your existing roles; it does not create new ones.
  • Read-only. This initial release surfaces data; it cannot modify records or send messages to clients on your behalf. Anything the assistant drafts is reviewed and sent by a person.
  • Auditable. Every query made through the Hona MCP Server is logged with the user, timestamp, and data accessed.
  • Revocable. Access can be disabled per user or firm-wide at any time.

Client communications remain within the same confidentiality and privilege protections that govern them in Hona today. Connecting an AI assistant does not change who can see what; it changes how quickly the people who already can see it can act on it.

What's next

This initial release is read-only by design. Write access, such as sending client messages or making in-app changes via the MCP server, is coming soon and will be gated behind the same firm-level controls described above.
